How to prepare for your appointment

Your time is precious.
Follow these tips to help prepare for your notary appointment.

1. Have your ID ready when your notary arrives.

Acceptable forms of ID
Drivers license or ID card
Drivers license from Canada or Mexico
U.S. Passport
U.S Military ID with photo
ID issued by a federally recognized tribal government
Employee ID card issued by an office or agency of the State of  California
A valid consular identification document issued by country of  citizenship

2. Have your documents ready.

Have your documents ready and filled out.
Does the name on the document match the ID of the signer?
*If the name on the document is John Jim Signer then the ID must as well
If you need witnesses, have them read at the time of the appointment.
The signer wanting their signature notarized must be physically present.

3. Know what type of notarization do you need.

If you do not know don't worry you can ask the document preparer or the receiver of the document. Due to California laws, notaries are prohibited from making that determination for you. Not to worry, here are some descriptions that may help.

Acknowledgment
For an acknowledgment the notary must ask if the signer signed the document of their own free will.

Jurat
A jurat means that the notary has to witness the signing of the document and the signer must swear an oath or affirmation that the contents of document are true.

Copy Certification of Power of Attorney
For a copy certification the notary checks if the document is a true and correct copy of the original. *NOTE: In California notaries can only certify copies of powers of attorney
